I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Adrian

Certified Tutor

My name is Adrian and I am currently working on my BS in Mathematics and Minor in Secondary Education at UNLV. I am 26 years old and I have been in Las Vegas all my life. I also am the first person to go to college in my family and I am first generation Mexican-American. My hobbies include painting and playing rugby. I am very tall and often make jokes about it since every interaction I have with someone they always say something about my height. I have been told before that I am a charismatic person and I really like to make people laugh. I think school should be an enjoyable experience and I try to do whatever I can to make it both entertaining and a great learning experience.
My teaching strategy is to bring student's confidence in a certain subject to better levels because once you have confidence in your schoolwork then you have confidence in everything you do. I have been tutoring now for the past year and a half and absolutely love it. I love helping other people and find it extremely rewarding when a student tells me that they have passed a class, test or anything positive in their schoolwork has come from me and helping them. I believe that everyone has potential to do great things, it just depends on how much work do you want to put into it.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

With a first session I want to target all of the trouble areas and see where is the base of the issue. If it is dealing with math most of the time the issues build off each other and starting with the foundation of the concept helps with understanding the rest of the concept. Before that I would like to know how the student works and how they learn best.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

我教学生如何使用他们的资源ir advantage. This era is the era of technology and people do not use it to their full potential. I will often show websites on where to find information for a paper to a smart calculator that can help every math problem you could have. Showing them to think outside the box and use everything to their advantage is the best way to go about teaching them about independence.
