Tyler

Certified Tutor

I believe what makes me a great tutor is my extensive educational background. I received my Bachelors of Science in Preprofessional Health Science at Purdue University in May 2014. My major consisted of taking many biology, chemistry, and physics classes. I went on to Palmer College of Chiropractic to achieve my Doctor of Chiropractic degree. While I was in chiropractic school, I was a Teaching Assistant for about 1.5 years for many different classes. My duties included assisting the instructor with in-class teaching and leading study hours outside of class. I received my degree in October 2018.

After graduation, I promptly received my Indiana chiropractic license. I have been practicing in northwest Indiana for the past two years. I'd like to spread my knowledge and help others struggling with subjects. I look forward to meeting you!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I am a very visual learner, so teaching through pictures, diagrams, graphs, etc., is my teaching philosophy.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would ask the student what they feel like that are struggling with, because they are the best ones at judging how much they know.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would tell them to watch educational videos on YouTube.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would talk to the student about things they are interested in. I'd make sure to take breaks every once in a while.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If there is an accurate video, I find that YouTube is an excellent way to learn.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I will build a relationship with the student first before we would work on any subject.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would try to relate the subject and make analogies to whatever hobbies or things they enjoy doing.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Every so often, I would give them practice problems to see if they are grasping the concepts.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would start with concepts that the student already knows and is good at to help build confidence. Then I'd build up to topics that are difficult for them to grasp.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would give out practice tests every so often to see what concepts the student understands. Also I will ask the student what they feel like they don't comprehend.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I will adapt my teaching style to whatever way the student learns the best.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I will use images and diagrams from my textbooks that I use for chiropractic school.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Like I said before, YouTube is a powerful learning tool if the video is from a valid source.
