I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Parisa

Certified Tutor

I am a graduating student from the University of Virginia, where I have been studying Economics and Politics in the Honors program as a Jefferson Scholar, a merit-based full scholarship. I absolutely love to teach and have spent much of my time in college teaching in various settings. Before getting into my qualifications, though, I think it's important to note one thing about my teaching style. I was never someone who simply "got" things in class. I often struggled to understand relatively simple concepts, especially when compared to my classmates, whether that was in test-taking or in any academic subject. So, I know what it's like to really wrestle with a subject, and I know what kind of assistance is helpful (and what kind of assistance/teaching is not). I think this--empathizing with a student and knowing the difference between good and bad help--is the most important quality of a good tutor. And just as importantly, I will work hard to tailor each tutoring session to the student's needs. I know that everyone's learning style is different, and I view it as my responsibility to cater to the student's strengths while addressing his/her weaknesses.

经验(短暂地):我被聘为教授assistant by my university's economics department (one of just a few undergraduates), and I also teach debate in local schools in Charlottesville. I enjoy working with students of all ages and have experience teaching students from the elementary school level to the college level. I've worked one-on-one both with friends and with my students on various subjects, including writing, economics, math, and standardized testing.

Some qualifications: I recently took the LSAT and scored a 180 after intensive independent study. I am very committed to helping other students increase their scores, as I fully understand the challenges of the test and I know that it can be frustrating not to see your score improve (I often felt that way myself!) The same is true of the SAT. I was not naturally good at test-taking, and so I am passionate about helping students who might be coming from that perspective. I also am excited to tutor in various academic subjects and to help students with college applications. I was accepted to various Ivy League schools before deciding to attend UVa and filled out many applications. As a debate coach, I am constantly editing and refining others' work.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Above all, I believe that if I am to be a good teacher, I need to empathize with my students and seek to understand what they find challenging, what their goals are, and what they hope to get out of each session. I value tailoring each tutoring session to the student's needs. I know that everyone's learning style is different, and it is my responsibility to cater to the student's strengths while addressing his/her weaknesses.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session should focus on establishing goals for the next several weeks or months. I would focus on getting to know the student both as a person and as a student. For the latter, I might ask: what are your objectives in hiring a tutor? What is your learning style? Are there methods of study that you hate or love? And if there were time, I might plunge into some material.
