Certified Tutor

Greetings!

I tutor a variety of subjects, but I specialize in helping students with mathematics and economics. I have experience tutoring a wide variety of students, including students of all ages and even those with learning disabilities. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Economics from Spelman College, and even wrote a Thesis. I am currently earning my Master's of Business Administration Degree in Marketing and Management at Howard University.

When students are not interested or bored, I think that they just lack the proper motivation and a way to integrate creativity into tutoring methods. I strive to help students pursue their studies with excellence and except nothing less. I believe that talent can be cultivated and is not simply something a person must be born with. When not tutoring, I enjoy dancing, volunteering with my church, going out with friends, kickboxing, travelling, and trying a new activity.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Throughout my academic career, tutoring and mentoring were an important part of my intellectual growth and development. Sharing knowledge is not only the best way to convey deep and thorough understanding of a subject, but also incredibly rewarding. When working with a student, I seek to engage with him or her in order to utilize existing strengths to bolster areas for development and provide a unique, individualized learning plan that will ensure success. The satisfaction of watching a tutee gain mastery of a subject that was once a cause of confusion and frustration is unparalleled. Being able to guide someone in this journey is a true privilege.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

坐下来,先了解彼此!然后,after breaking the ice, discuss in regards to what subjects and topics to study. Finally, organize and create a study schedule in regards to hitting the certain topics.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Practice truly makes one perfect. In my experience, completing homework and study questions are a necessity. Also, completing extra questions and creating study questions will help ensure that one practices at their fullest level, so they can be fully independent.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Organization and creativity are tools for a student to stay motivated. I believe in sticking with a consistent schedule is necessary for a study to remain motivated. If a student gets bored, I believe in also creating creative games and exercises to ensure that one understands the concepts, in a fun way.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Having patience and understanding are the first steps in helping a student with their difficulties. Then, making sure with take extra time to rehearse and reinforce that particular skill or concept would be the proper way to do it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading with the student and taking a break during a reading exercise is very important to helping students whom are struggling with reading comprehension. When taking breaks, discussing and asking questions about what is occurring helps to reinforce and guide the student in comprehending the material.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Understanding the student's needs, comprehending their strengths and weaknesses, and organizing a consistent schedule are the strategies when I start to work with a student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Positive reinforcement! This means that we can have fun games or activities in regards to rehearsing a concept. Also, rewarding one for doing great is also a necessity!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Homework assignments and practice materials are the best ways that the student completely understands the material. Also, allowing a student to feel comfortable to ask questions is very important. Finally, giving practice tests and exams really gives a clear understanding if the student truly understands the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Practice, practice, practice! I cannot say that enough! Practicing is truly the vehicle for a student to build up confidence in any subject. This means homework, practice exams, fun activities, watching videos, or even taking educational trips! The foundation for all of these variables are to continue to reinforce and practice so that a student truly becomes an expert in a subject.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by reviewing their grades on homework assignments, quizzes, and tests. Also, having a transparent discussion with a student on what their needs are. Finally, also speaking to a parent also helps to give another perspective on evaluating a student's needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Understanding a student's likes, dislikes, method of learning are all very important to adapting to a student's needs. A student may be more motivated by strictly practicing problems in the book, versus a student being more motivated through games. It all depends on what they feel works best for them to succeed to the fullest.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The type of materials that I typically use during a tutoring session are notebooks, scrap paper, pencils, and dry/erase board or virtual practice board. I also include fun materials like food, music, games, etc., as well.
