How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I usually have the student re-write the passage, or a portion of it, in his or her own words. This allows me to see how the student is interpreting the material and correct any errors in comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found listening to the student to be a successful strategy. This allows me to focus the lessons to each student's specific needs and goals.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would try to relate the subject to something they already like.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Having the student create his or her own questions is a great way to check for mastery.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Personal anecdotes and stories from other students help make success seem real and achievable.
