I started tutoring when I was in high school. I worked at my local Kumon Math & Reading Learning Center as a Teacher's Assistant and helped the students with their math work. I did that for three years and I had a great time doing it. I loved being able to interact with so many different types of kids and making them appreciate the work they doing. Now I'm in college at UNLV and I'm looking forward to tutoring again.
My goal is to make sure every student feels comfortable with the working they're doing. I want them to be able to walk away properly understanding how to do each problem on their own. More importantly, I want them to have the desire to learn how to complete their work. I want them to have fun.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I want each student to have the understanding and desire to solve problems on their own.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I'd first get to know the student. I would find out what things they like and what they like to do. I will also try to learn how comfortable they are with the material we are working with.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would teach them the type of questions they need to ask themselves: What are you trying to find? What information is given? What is the first step? If they begin asking these questions, they will be able to break down the problem and solve it on their own.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would encourage them to learn the material as best as they can. That way, they can finish their work quicker and spend time doing what they enjoy.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would break it down to the smallest steps and then build back up to the skill or concept we are working on. I would then make sure they have enough practice with that idea before moving on to the next subject.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Instead of it being a chore, I would try and make it fun for them. I would make into a game or a fun activity.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would give them a variety of problems to work on based on the material. If they can answer them confidently, I will know they understand it.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
You gain the most confidence when you can successfully answer a question. I would start by giving them basic questions and gradually make them harder. If they can answer them properly, they will feel good and be ready to move on to the next subject.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Every student is different. Some are visual learners while others can do everything in their head. I will work to their strengths so they can best understand the material.
