Certified Tutor

As an undergrad at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I dedicated three years to conducting research that focused on children with traumatic experiences and troubled backgrounds, which reiterated the need for early intervention strategies and mentorship for students. Through this research, I developed the passion to assist students experiencing difficulties in school to develop study and learning skills appropriate for their grade level. Furthermore, obtaining my Masters in Social Work with a focus on case management and clinical practice skills coupled with therapeutic experience shaped me into an effective advocate and partner for students experiencing academic difficulty.

As a crisis counselor in Charlotte, NC, I was afforded the opportunity to work with youth ages 7-17 experiencing crisis. As a Safe Place advocate, it was vitally important to be person-centered and strength-focused to uphold an environment that was not only invitingly safe, but also nonjudgmental. This opportunity allowed me to expand my skills by serving as a therapeutic counselor providing guidance, supervision, and model behavior to children, during their time of crisis. Utilizing the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and Love & Logic Model, I conducted individual and family counseling sessions alongside group enrichment activities and daily case management. In addition, I also provided homework support and individualized tutoring for the students to ensure each child maintained their grades while in my care. My duties also included conducting individual assessments to determine the areas of learning that the student needed the most help. Additionally, I facilitated workshops, activities, and community events that gave the residents the opportunity to learn life skills and develop relationships. Paired with counseling, I also served as the Aftercare Coordinator where I monitored outcomes by collecting data and contacting former residents to gauge satisfaction of services rendered and offer additional assistance if needed.

显示在我附上的简历,我的经验has not only rendered impactful but also insightful for the potential I have as a passionate advocate and supporter for students of all levels. In closing, I would relish the opportunity to apply my skills and experiences to assist your student in developing study and learning skills that will lead to academic success!

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to tailor lesson plans and study skills according to individual needs and strengths. Rather than lectures, I prefer providing teaching methods that best help the student's auditory, visual, and hands-on learning skills.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session would typically be an assessment of the student's needs and the areas within the subject that require focus. The idea is to gauge exactly where the student is in their learning and pinpoint where we should start in the tutoring process.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

It is my belief that tutoring is all about empowering the student to become independent learners by highlighting their strengths and skills that will allow them to master the material. As a tutor, I consider myself an educational advocate and partner that not only provides support for the student but to also show the student their hidden abilities and skills to conquer the subject.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

It is important to identify the purpose and goals of tutoring when working with a student. While that goal may be to get a higher grade at the end of the course, we cannot forget to celebrate the small victories in between. For example, where an elementary student may only be able to read 5 pages of a book today, tomorrow he/she may read a whole chapter. Next week, he/she may read the whole book. It is important to celebrate each milestone! Remember that small progress is still a victory and should be recognized.

如何帮助学生在r是谁eading comprehension?

Students struggling with reading comprehension are typically having difficulty understanding the meanings of words. It may be necessary to read a sentence word-by-word with a dictionary alongside. After identifying the meaning of each word, I would have the student reread the sentence and paraphrase it. After a while, my hope would be that the student will be able to repeat what they read through summary and paraphrasing, demonstrating their ability to comprehend what they have read.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Learning each individual's strengths and tailoring my teaching strategy to fit their learning ability. I prefer to observe the student as they work to help me gauge their skills and how they learn best. Having a conversation about their needs and how I can help is also very helpful. Although I am tutoring to help students progress academically, it is most beneficial to remember that the student is the expert in their learning and that I must listen to their needs and what they believe they are capable of achieving.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Innovation and creativity is key when working with a student. Games, mnemonic devices, practice worksheets, etc. are all great tools to help a student find learning to be enjoyable. I try to make learning fun by thinking outside the box and tailoring my strategy to the student's interest. By doing so, I am able to utilize tools that are not only age- appropriate but also captivating to the student.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

After the student and I have developed a strategy on how to approach the problem, I would then require the student to practice the tool on their own. This will allow me to gauge whether or not the student has grasped the material or if we should try a different approach.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Positive reinforcement is a great way to build a student's confidence. Words of encouragement and reward will uplift the student's confidence and encourage them to keep trying.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I allow the student to complete a list of practice problems without my assistance. Once the problems are complete, I like to have a conversation with the student about what they believe they can do well and where they struggle the most. After gathering such information, I can then assess where the student is in their learning.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I tailor my tutoring style by speaking with student about what's important to them and how do they learn best. Once I am aware of what works for the student, I then adjust my strategies based on their needs. For example, if a student states that they have trouble staying focused for longer periods of time, I know that the lesson plan needs to be split into small sections throughout the session. Time, subject matter, grade/age level, etc. are all are areas that can be tailored to help the student learn at their level.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

我喜欢利用实践问题,白板,inanimate objects, online study sites, etc. to tutor students. I find that being flexible in my materials allows the students to choose what type of study environment they prefer and the materials they would like to use.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has trouble learning a concept, I would try to teach it in various ways depending on their learning style. Tutoring requires creativity because not all students learn alike. Therefore, I would research various ways to demonstrate a concept until the student is able to understand and utilize the skill.
