Robert

Certified Tutor

I signed up with Varsity Tutors for two reasons: to make extra income on the side while I am attending Arizona State, and to follow my passion for helping others out. Recently, I have volunteered in hospitals, as well as partaken in many formal tutoring programs, such as a class in my high school in which the subject material was the best way to encourage and motivate students for long term success.

As a tutor, my goal is to instill confidence in students, develop a curiosity for the world, create a fascination for the fundamentals, and imbue motivation for learning from within the learner. I believe that every person has the capacity for any subject, and that in order to unlock the key to success, each student has to look inside themselves, with possibly help from an external source (in this example, me as a tutor!). I'm very passionate, lighthearted, and confident in my abilities as a teacher.

What is your teaching philosophy?

To help the student understand the material in a way that can enlighten their view of the world.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Ask them what they are interested in outside of school (extracurriculars).

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Connect the subject material with the world around them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Give constructive compliments every time they put in good effort.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would break it down into the simple terms and figure out what misconceptions they have that is making the material hard to learn.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Asking the student to explain how they approach the problem logically.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Connect it to cool parts of the world (motorcycles, music, surgery, etc.).

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Ask them to logically explain their reasoning.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Compliments. Lots of compliments on effort.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By walking through problems with them.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Every student needs different methods. In order to adapt, I always look to where the student's own strengths and weaknesses are.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would suggest good books to read that may interest them. Reading comprehension is a practice-based skill.
