I have been a tutor for six years, and have tutored all ages. I specialize in the college admission process, and especially like working with students on admissions essays and test prep. I graduated from the University of Notre Dame two years ago with a degree in television and anthropology. I work at MTV during the weekday, but am free weekends and weeknights after 7:00 pm.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I think a good tutor allows the student to learn what they already know before trying to teach them anything new. I love working with students on their writing. I also love sharing the tricks and tips I learned during my own time as a student.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I first talk about with the student about what they are hoping to accomplish, and what they want to improve. I go over the obstacles they've been hitting, and-- if applicable or possible-- I look over past assignments to identify problem areas. We then outline a study plan from there.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
The best way to help a student become an independent learner is to give them the tools to break down problems and solve them on their own.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Methods vary with the age of the student, but I typically try to focus on progress and intersperse difficult questions with ones the student has already mastered to prevent them from getting too discouraged.
