I was born and raised in Shanghai, China and came to the United States about 9 years ago. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Business from University of San Francisco and my Master's Degree in Accountancy from Baruch College in New York City. I used to work as the program assistant for the language department and my responsibility was helping students register for the HSK, the Chinese proficiency test. I currently work as a Certified Public Accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, but I still volunteer to teach at public schools in New York whenever I have time because I found myself really enjoy teaching and learning about students at the same time. In addition, with my experience in tutoring Mandarin during both undergraduate and graduate studies, I believe I can help students speak fluent Mandarin Chinese as well as understand Chinese culture.
As we know, Mandarin Chinese is a challenging language. To make students interested in learning pinyin and grammar, I will provide you with dictations, tests, and quizzes while keeping you entertained by doing some skits and dialogues to practice the tones. I also offer classes for people who plan to travel to China and just want to pick up a few Chinese words and sentences in order to have a nice and relaxing vacation.
I will say tutoring is my one of my hobbies. In my spare time, I also like to travel and read.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Learning and teaching at the same time.

Starting with an icebreaker.

Encourage him to point out his own issues and mistakes.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Playing games.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Use several sessions to demonstrate the concept and practice with him more.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Suggest him to read whenever he can and provide with more interesting articles
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Cheer them up more often.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Combine the subject with their hobbies.

Ask him to teach me back.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Encourage him to talk about it with his parents and friends.

By asking him first and then discovering it during our conversation.

By checking with him and asking for his feedback.
