教育一直是我的激情。我娱乐eived my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Cortland College in upstate New York. I then moved to Florida and received a Masters Degree in Reading Education K-12 and another Masters Degree in Educational Leadership. I consider myself a life-long learner. I am always taking part in professional development courses and attending educational conferences. I have been in the field of education for 13 years. 8 years in the classroom; grades 1, 3, 4, and 5. I spent one year as a reading intervention teacher focusing on grades 2-5 and then spent the last 4 years as a Math Coach both at the building level working with teachers and students in grades K-6 and at the district level working with all elementary teachers and administration. As a coach I work with students in small groups. I work with both struggling students and high-achieving students. This includes students with special needs and students whose first language is not English. I enjoy tutoring in both reading and math because both are skills that will be needed throughout a person's life no matter what path they take. Both are foundational skills and it is so exciting to see a light-bulb go off for a student when they finally grasp a concept. I believe that every student can and will learn. Different students learn in different ways and it is key to get to know the child you are working with and teach in the way the individual student learns best. I am very flexible, easy-going, patient and can adapt to different situations that may be presented. Learning is an ongoing, life-long process. I truly enjoy learning something new each day and helping others to learn. It is a passion of mine to help others and what better way than teaching! When I am not teaching I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, playing with my dogs Harley and Kaiya, reading, playing tennis, running, traveling to new and exciting places, playing board games, and watching movies. I look forward to working with you and helping you to achieve your best.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Setting high expectations for all students is important. Every child can and will learn and be successful.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student and build a relationship. It is important to know the student and what motivates him/her and what their learning style is.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will help build a student's confidence. No one should feel that they "can't do" anything.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Being successful with small tasks can build a student's confidence. It really differs for each child and would be based on the student's need.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a child is having difficulty learning a skill or concept I would change the mode of my teaching to something that may help that child understand better. Whether it is drawing pictures, using tools, etc.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Students struggling with reading comprehension should be immersed in reading. Doing think alouds and working with digestible bites of text is also helpful.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that it is most important to learn about the child I am working with. What are their strengths? What do they like? What keeps their attention?

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Working with questions that the student may feel more comfortable with and then moving onto the more difficult aspects. Making learning fun is key!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Teacher observation. Working one on one is very beneficial to seeing what the student is being successful with and what they might need more support with. Mini-assessments, whether verbal or written can also be a good way to check learning.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Set short term and long-term goals. When the student reaches those goals we celebrate that milestone!

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The online platform, pictures, drawings, manipulatives...whatever the student needs.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Discussion, small assessments.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Based on the student's needs. All instruction is differentiated to meet that student and get them to where they need to be.
