Certified Tutor

I graduated from Queens College with a degree in Sociology. I am currently in the process of applying to graduate programs to pursue my own dreams of an MBA. I have been a teacher/tutor for SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS, GMAT, AP US History, and various other subjects for over four years. My favorite subject to teach is AP US History because I have the ability to make the stories of our past fun and interesting. I constantly update my teaching materials and methodology with each passing year to help my students. I enjoy teaching and seeing my students learn new things. When my students are able to earn better scores the moment is very rewarding to me. If there is a problem that you do not understand, I will help you understand it fully. Outside of academic I have a passion for sports, running, and music.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I first teach the theory behind the idea. Then I apply the theory to a specific question or situation. Then I practice with my students. And finally I want to see if the can replicate what I taught them.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Listen to what they want and evaluate their needs.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Discipline and the right tools.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Positive Mental Attitude. If you think the test is boring, it will be boring. If you think the test is interesting and exciting, it will be interesting and exciting.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try a different method. Or go over it in a different way.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Relax and break it down.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

You have to build their confidence and show that you know what you are talking about.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find something within that subject that is rewarding to them, whether it be a simpler part of the subject or a different part of the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Evaluating and observing if they can replicate what I did or said.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Start off small.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I can figure out what a student needs within the first five minutes of a pretest.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I have different speeds and materials for all different student levels to make sure that their needs are met.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I make my own materials and I also use practice tests.
