Certified Tutor

Having tutoring for over several years now, I have gained an immense amount of teaching experiences working with students from junior high school, high school, and college both undergrad and a few graduate. I know what it feels like when someone is having difficulty in a particular subject, they often get frustrated, angry, exhausted, and stressed after working on problem sets in physics and/or mathematics for an excessive amount of time and still cannot find a reasonable solution to solve the problem. There are also times when students are unable to start. My job as a tutor is to ensure that they can fully overcome these obstacles and solve the problems with ease in a coherent and thorough manner without any difficulty. The way I go about eliminating these obstacles and difficulties that each student is facing, is by creating multiple teaching strategies. Some of my strategies involved the making of a new lesson plan detailing important concepts and terms covered in class, supplemented with examples and textbook materials. Other strategies involved the use of a step by step procedure that will help to break down concepts into simpler terms and definition until the students are able to gain an insight on how to solve the problem. To help the students engaged into the problems being discussed, I often choose real life examples and applications to demonstrate how problems of these types can be used to solve real life situations.
As a graduate with a BS dual degree in electrical engineering and mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, I've leveraged the skills taught to me to developed software for hardware platforms in control systems, flight controls. and electric motor machinery. Also, the skills taught to me has led me to designed hardware for sustainable energy subsystems. These subsystems are often successful because I'm able to create various plans and step by step procedure similar to the ones I used for my students, before starting the developmental phase. My interest are in Flight Controls and Applied Mathematics and I look forward in pursuing higher education in Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering in the next few years to come. I'm looking forward to working with as many students as possible and assist them with the best possible teaching strategy, so they can be the next or future generation of Doctors. Lawyers, Engineer, Scientist or Mathematician.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would create a plan entailing step-by-step procedures for each concept using the best possible resources/materials available. To break down concepts into simpler terms until the student gain an insight and an understanding of what the concept is detailing. An explanation of the simpler terms taken from the concept broken down, supplied with many examples.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

From my experience as a teaching assistant and a tutor, I found it to be most successful when I provided students with tons of example problem sets that are covered in each mathematical concept/theory. Examples are often taken from a textbook that best fit each concept students are introduced to. I always suggest students to go beyond and practice 2 to 3 more problems similar to the assigned homework problem to gain a better understanding of the topic covered in class.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

To help students get excited and engaged into a topic they are struggling with, I usually take each topic and show how we can apply it to real-life situations, and how we can use it to solve this issue.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

To be sure students understand the materials really well, I often provide examples similar to the problem we previously went over with step-by-step instructions. With the examples I use, I make sure students are following the step-by-step instructions used to solve the previous problem they were having difficulty with. If not, then I would go over the instructions with them again until they gain an insight.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

The way I evaluate a student need, if they are unsure where to start and having difficulty tackling a problem, is by first listening to what they have to say and then giving them a pop quiz on the topic covered in class. For the ones that are having problems solving them all, I would start by making a lesson plan with step-by-step instructions to break down each problem as simple as I can, until they are able to understand.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I often used 1-2 textbooks/materials for each courses I tutored in, along with lesson plan and notes I created for each concept, supplemented with examples.
