Lani

Certified Tutor

I'm a recent graduate of Williams College, a small, prestigious liberal arts college in Massachusetts. I received my Bachelor of Arts in History and minored in International and Africana Studies. Due to my profound interest in Spanish, I was the recipient of a research fellowship in Guatemala and earned a Certificate from the Language Department, the latter only awarded to students who completed seven courses with a minimum of a B+ cumulative average and received an A on the proficiency exam. From my experience working as a legal intern at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and a History major, I have strong writing and research background. During my time at Williams, I also worked as a student technology consultant and a teaching assistant to a high-school summer program on campus.

What makes me unique as a tutor is that I can empathize with the frustrations of learning. I am unashamed to admit that during my academic experience, I openly sought help and tutoring from peers and friends, alike. Therefore, I understand what it is like to seek assistance, solve an issue strategically, succeed and be better off because of being honest with myself. As a tutor, I know my students would flourish from patience, diligence, and fun. We would approach topics in a relaxed and prudent manner.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy is to approach each as task thoughtfully and strategically as possible!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

We would do an icebreaker, identify where the issues lie, and start to plan, and then work strategically from there.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would encourage my student to become an independent learner by highlighting the exciting parts of the subjects and how it's interconnected to the world around us.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help my student stay motivated by encouraging that they maintain a positive attitude and share my own anecdotes.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would identify where the issue lies, work through and explain each step, create examples, and devise strategies to overcome the difficulty.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

We would read through the passages, sentence by sentence, discuss it, and define words if needed to improve reading comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Creating an environment of patience, honesty, and fun for my student are my best strategies.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would highlight the fun and interesting elements of the subject, and demonstrate how it's related to other subjects the already student likes.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

To ensure that a student understands the material, I would ask the student to clearly explain the material to me, show all work, and give them many practice problems.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

P.A.C.E. : a Positive Attitude Changes Everything!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I determine what my student's needs are by close listening, asking questions tailored to discover the issue, and making sure they understand the material every step of the way.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt to my student's needs by remaining flexible and ready to shift gears when necessary.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use all the necessary materials one would need during a tutoring session.
