I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Marcus

Certified Tutor

I received my B.S. in Microbiology from Purdue University in 2014, and am now studying to obtain my PhD in the same subject from Georgia Institute of Technology. I have a passion for math and science, and am looking to share that passion with those I tutor. While at Purdue, I had much informal tutoring experience helping my classmates study for exams. In my first year at Georgia Tech, I have had the wonderful opportunity to work one on one with two different undergraduate students in the lab. I am adept at changing my teaching style to match someone's level of understanding in a particular subject. I am a huge proponent of higher education and believe everyone should have the opportunity to seek an advanced degree. I really enjoy helping people learn new things and to think more critically about the world around them. While I can tutor in math and sciences as well as ACT and GRE test prep, my favorite subject to tutor would have to be Biology, because it is my favorite subject and the one I am currently studying. I like to make sure that those I work with have a sound understanding of the concepts and are able to apply those concepts to answer diverse sets of questions. No matter the subject I tutor, my job is to make you a better problem solver, a skill that will aid you in any facet of your life. I find learning and discovery very exciting, and have a ton of stake in the success of those I tutor. When I'm not tutoring or doing research in the lab, I enjoy exercising and reading comics.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get an idea for the student's level of understanding of the subjects. Find out what classes they have taken in the subject and what concepts they have the most trouble with.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

It is important to teach a student problem solving skills, not just to teach them how to solve a particular problem. You have to teach a student the concepts and how to apply to concepts so they can answer any problem they face.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Come at the skill or concept from a different angle. Try to get them to think differently about the concept or skill.
