What is your teaching philosophy?

My primary goal as an educator is to get my students to think. This means having students engage in their learning in a hands on manner, and engaging all of their learning styles and needs.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I enjoy getting to know what they feel they are successful in, and what they feel are their strengths. I like to use their needs and strengths to guide our sessions.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

In order to help a student become an independent learner, I first need to encourage students to use their strengths to help them complete assignments. Showing rather than telling is a cornerstone pedagogical strategy that you might see in my classroom.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help students stay motivated by encouraging them and showing them their previous successes. Learning is a lifelong process, and showing them what they have already accomplished will help foster a love of learning in the future.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a concept, I like to work through this difficulty together. We will take a variety of approaches, and through our one-on-one sessions, I hope to encourage students to tell me their needs and engage them in this manner.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

This is a common difficulty among students. Together, we will annotate the text using both verbal and non verbal cues, defining vocabulary terms, and making content and real world connections.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

There are many strategies I have found to be most successful when working with a student. First, getting to know the students strengths and weaknesses is a primary concern of mine. Second, I enjoy a collaborative environments where the student and I work together. Whether this is editing an essay or reading text, collaborating together is a cornerstone of my sessions.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I enjoy connecting the content we are studying to their everyday life to engage students in my subject matter. This can be done though making personal connections or studying current events to make this content applicable.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I use a variety of assessments, discussions, analyses, and higher order questioning to ensure that my students are retaining the information we have covered in a lesson.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Through encouragement and independent learning, I like to foster a sense of confidence in each of my students. Setting achievable goals for my students and having them reach their goals is the best way to have my them feel confident in their abilities.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

They are the best source of their own needs. I like to start each session with what they feel they need help on, and go from there. I also like to assess students before we start to see where they are struggling to better guide my session.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Tutoring is dictated by the student, unlike school, which is dictated by a curriculum. They tell me what they feel they need to work on, and we go from this point. I adapt to fit their learning styles and needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use a variety of tools, including document editors, graphic organizers, assessments, and discussion platforms during the course of my interactive tutoring session.
