I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Let me start off by saying, I love to read. My dream job would be a place where I could read all day. It doesn't matter the subject, it's just the joy of reading that I love. The way reading takes you to different places in time. You can be an astronaut, enlist in the military, go back in time. The world is completely open and the limits are as far as your imagination can take you. I want to instill that love for reading in the children that I work with.

A little background about myself. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management through the University of Phoenix. I am a US Navy veteran, where I spent 5 years of my life and was able to use my military benefits to completely pay for my college. I am thinking about going back to school for my Master's in Psychology, but I am taking a break from school for now. I have four children. A son, 20, who is in college, a daughter, 16, who will be graduating high school this year, then twin seven year olds, who are in the 2nd grade. I work at BAE Systems as a Material Control Planner II. To put it the easy way, I figure out which parts the Navy ships need to be fixed and I buy those parts.

I am able to tutor reading, writing, math, study and homework skills, plus help with the ASVAB. My favorite subjects to tutor and to learn about would have to be reading and math. Both of these subjects are very interesting to me, and I want to make them fun and exciting for other people too.

My hobbies outside of work and tutoring would be reading, video games, music and movies. My favorite authors are Danielle Steel, Jodi Picoult, and VC Andrews. My favorite video games are Call of Duty; Advanced Warfare, Rockband, and Guitar Hero. I will watch any action/adventure movies, along with horror and sci-fi. I am a huge Star Trek fan and Have plans to go to Tidewater Comic-con next year in May.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

My first session with a student would involve finding out what the student knows, plus finding out which learning style works best.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Have the student show me how they think it should be done. This will help me assess where they are going wrong and what areas need the most help.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Find a subject that the student is passionate about. Whether it's cars, toys, video games, etc... Then use those subjects to help the student learn how to read and comprehend better.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that no two people are the same, and no two people learn the same. Some people are very visual learners, while some are not. I would have to figure out the student's learning style in order to figure out the best way to tutor them.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I have found that one of the best ways to find out if someone understands a subject is to have them "teach the teacher." This means showing me what they know and which steps they would take. This enables me to see if they truly know how to do it, or where more help needs to be given.
