In a typical first session with a student, I would introduce myself and give a little background information. I would also inquire about the student's current grade and math level. I also like to ask students what their goals are for the session.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by first modeling with the student, and then giving the student time on his or her own to problem solve. I would teach the student strategies to help him or her excel.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by referring to his or her goals for the session. I would encourage the student and provide positive feedback whenever possible.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would definitely find another method to use to help the student better understand.

I help students who are struggling with reading comprehension by breaking the text down and translating complicated words and phrases to everyday language.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The strategies I have found to be most successful when working with a student are modeling, giving various types of examples, and showing several methods to solve problems.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help a student get excited or engaged with a subject he or she is struggling in by finding real-world related problems, or problems that involve that student's personal interests.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

To be sure that a student understands the material, I would give mini quizzes, written and verbal, and I would ask students to relay why we do certain things to solve certain types of problems.

To evaluate a student's needs, I sometimes start off with something challenging. For example, in solving a two step equation, a student may make careless mistakes with operations. By giving this type of problem, I know where to begin helping: with arithmetic.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to the needs of the student by goal-setting with the student at the beginning of the session.
