I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

Hi! My name is Katie. I recently completed my PhD in Clinical Psychology and I am pursuing a career in military mental health. I moved to Tucson in 2014 for my clinical internship and I love it out here! I'm passionate about education and learning. I believe in modifying my teaching style to the unique needs of the student in order to ensure a maximal learning experience. I also believe that learning isn't just about performing well on tests (although that is important and I will do my best to enable my students to achieve their desired scores) but rather applying new material/learning to the bigger picture of long-term goals.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Maximizing student's strengths and improving upon weaknesses. Modifying teaching styles to the unique learning needs of the student. Making learning relevant.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

确定学生的辅导spe的目标cifically, and his/her education on the bigger picture. Discuss the student's sense of his/her approach to learning. Share my approach to teaching.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teaching study strategies that apply beyond the specific topic we are working on in tutoring.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Identifying his/her big picture goals, and demonstrating that the current challenges he/she is facing will help achieve those goals

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Practice, practice, practice! Also, approaching the problem from different angles/learning styles to see what "clicks."

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Guide them to identify the topic/subject, as well as key words, phrases, and transitions.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Asking questions to assess comprehension; have the student "teach" the material back to me.
