Tyler

Certified Tutor

我是一个从马里兰大学毕业,Baltimore County (UMBC), a public research university. There, I was a member of the Honors College and a four-year recipient of the Humanities Scholarship. I earned my Bachelors of Arts in both Cultural Anthropology and Environmental Studies. While in college, I volunteered with Reading Partners, an organization that pairs volunteers with a student who is reading below grade level. After just a few months with my student, I was able to help my student attain grade-level reading skills and discover a love of nonfiction books. I also volunteered with my university's English Language Institute. There I helped a student from South Korea improve his English skills and acclimate to life in the United States. Upon graduating, I was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to teach English in Malaysia.

I am patient, organized, focused, compassionate, and driven. I think my greatest asset as a tutor is my flexibility. There are a multitude of ways to approach every question and every subject. I understand that a student's perspective may be very different than my own and I will work tirelessly to frame questions in a way that makes the most sense to them. I believe that tutoring is less about rigid instruction and more about providing students with the tools they need to reach their full potential. I tutor a broad range of subjects including SAT prep (all subjects), arithmetic, ecology, environmental science, public speaking, writing, and study skills.

Traveling is my passion. I studied abroad in South Africa at the University of Cape Town. My semester there provided me with an enriched perspective on education, reignited my interest in international current events, and challenged me to constantly strive for improvement. In addition to traveling, I enjoy reading, cooking, hiking, baking, singing, attending concerts, and the Baltimore Ravens.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Helping a student become an independent learner is all about motivation. My academic achievements enabled me to finish college without debt and live in a foreign country for free! By sparking a student's intellectual curiosity, making them aware of the doors academic achievement can open, and teaching them organizational and analytical skills, I can transform a student into an independent learner.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Practice, practice, practice. To assist with reading comprehension, I would start a student with an article related directly to their interests and ask them standard questions about the article. From there, I would introduce an article about secondary interests and do the same. Once a student feels comfortable with the type of reading comprehension questions that are often asked, I would have them read more outdated works and encourage them to ask questions to enhance their comprehension of various literary works.
