Hannah

Certified Tutor

I am a student at the University of San Diego, studying Behavioral Neuroscience and Pre-Med. I love photography, reading, and music. I have helped many people with difficult concepts and homework for a long time, specifically children I babysat or friends in my classes. The subjects I am offering tutoring for are Elementary Math, Algebra 1, Geometry, Middle School Math, Pre-Algebra, and Spanish up to level 4. I am also able to help with study skills and organization. I love to tutor math, mainly because it makes sense and is a lot of fun once it makes sense! My philosophy is to make learning fun, because loving school makes it way more bearable, and increases a students chance in success.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that learning something for the long run as opposed to cramming it for the test is much more effective. I also believe that everyone has the potential to learn, and should be given that opportunity.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would ask them to update me on what they are currently learning, and help them do any homework they have been given, to get a chance to see how they work and what they mainly struggle with in terms of doing problems and assignments.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help them by teaching skills to be able to do homework and study on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Depending on age, I would help a student stay motivated through prizes (e.g. stickers for younger kids) or through praising them of their good work. I believe that people truly want to learn and love to learn, and once they start to pick up on how to accomplish what they are struggling with, they will begin to get more excited about it.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I believe that practice makes perfect, so I would find a way to ease into the subject by starting with really easy problems and moving onto the more complex ones. I would break the concept apart piece by piece, and possibly make fun ways to remember the steps.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

To comprehend large pieces of work, it is helpful to summarize each of the paragraphs as a student reads them, keeping them engaged and paying attention to all details.
