Emily
Certified Tutor
I recently moved from Midwest to the Front Range, and – after taking a short break following the births of my daughters – am eager to return to working directly with students of various backgrounds. In my five years as an English teacher in Chicago, I worked with all levels of students both in the general classroom setting and through individual tutoring. One of my main interests as a teacher is differentiated instruction, and I have always sought out multiple modes of instruction to better meet students’ needs. In working one-on-one with students or in a small group setting, I found ways to provide instruction based on individual learning preferences and – perhaps more importantly – worked to show students how to advocate for and maximize their own learning styles. I have extensive experience tutoring for the ACT as I taught Saturday and after-school test preparation classes. As a senior English teacher, I worked to help students refine their college application essays, and this is one area of direct instruction that I particularly enjoy.
One of my first experiences as a tutor came in college where I worked as a writing advisor for my university’s writing center. Our focus was on helping students to develop their skills while, typically, helping them work on specific assignments. From unpacking the assignment, to strategic pre-writing, to drafting and then peer and teacher review, I worked alongside students to create successful and positive experiences that encouraged experimentation and growth. As a tutor and teacher, I am adept at ensuring that learning goals are being met and built upon while also working within the framework of specific curricula, as needed.
