Lindsey

Certified Tutor

I am a certified secondary school English teacher and an adjunct instructor at multiple local universities. I taught for five years in the New York City DoE.

我在佩斯大学主修英语,然后received a M.A. in English at New York University. After discovering that my true passion was teaching and not research, I went back to school and got my Master of Arts in Teaching. Since 2009, I have taught 8th, 9th, 10th, and 12th grades. I have also taught three different courses as an adjunct instructor.

My educational philosophy is based on considering the whole student: what he or she likes, his or her strengths and weaknesses, his or her temperament. By considering all of those things I connect with the student and this helps them to do their best work for me.

What is your teaching philosophy?

As a passionate educator, I believe that every child deserves to be guided to the love of learning through individualized attention. I work with my students to discover what they love, and use that information to help them find their own love of learning.

I believe that all students can learn. In my work in the public school system of New York City, I have helped students of all levels make progress. I have worked with students of all ages (4-40s), so I know how to shape my curriculum to the needs of my students.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During our first session, I will start by discussing the student's goals and desires. Once I have fully understood those, I will assess the student's current skill level. I will then develop a plan that takes everything into account and run it by the student. Once we have agreed on the plan of action, we will get started!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Helping students become independent learners is about helping them discover what they are good at. All students are capable, but many lack confidence. When I help students to discover their own strengths, they then find the confidence to become independent learners.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

There are many ways to help a student stay motivated, but the best is to help them discover their own intrinsic motivation. Helping a student discover that is about helping them determine why the learning is important and how the learning will benefit them.
