Zelalem
Certified Tutor
In 2016 I received my M.P.H degree in Global Environmental Health at Emory University and in 2014 I received my B.A. degree in Community Health at Brown University. Currently, I am working as a program manager at a local non-profit organization in Miami. Outside of academia and work my interests are singing karaoke with friends, swimming, watching movies, and reading about environmental and social justice issues. In the past I have tutored public health topics (including epidemiology) online, taught environmental science and history courses, and tutored students in-person on ACT prep, biology, voice lessons, and Spanish language. My clients have been middle school, high school, university, and graduate students. My favorite subjects to tutor are those that I myself had to work the hardest to conquer (ACT, Spanish fluency, epidemiology and chemistry)! I love teaching these subjects because through my own struggle to achievement I have developed especially effective methods for my clients to succeed as well. My teaching style is based upon working with clients to develop individualized study methods. I am a tutor who is patient, caring, and committed to seeing you exceed your goals. Don't hesitate to contact me if you are searching for a tutor with these qualities.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that every student can learn when they are given the attention necessary to master a subject from a teacher who is patient and determined to see their student succeed.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
在第一次会议,我花时间了解the student's personality, goals, interests, and study habits. We then do a diagnostic test to identify strengths and weaknesses. From there we would begin to explore strategies to learn the material.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I help students become independent learners by finding ways for them to engage with the material. In addition, I make sure by the end of every session that there is some evidence of progress. If students can see themselves progress, they feel more confident in the material and more excited to master the information independently.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I help students stay motivated by taking note of their progress every lesson. I give them constant feedback on how they have progressed. In any areas that are slow in progression, I spend most of the lesson teaching students different study techniques in order to find the method of learning that works for them for that specific subject. Overall I am a very positive and upbeat tutor, and I think this allows my students to stay positive and motivated as well.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
我慢慢地打破圣的技能或概念udent. We take it piece by piece and build on the concept on each lesson until it is understood. In addition, I go home and research different ways to teach the concept. Using these techniques, I can adjust my teaching style in order to fit the needs of the student.
