I'm a current PhD student at Tufts University studying Applied Math, and formerly I attained my Bachelor of Science in Math at Pepperdine University. I have been tutoring math for three and a half years now, including Calculus, Differential Equations, and Algebra. I also have taken and tutored many standardized tests, including AP Calc, A-Level Math/Further Pure Math, and GRE Quantitative Analysis. In addition, as a Chinese native speaker, I'm also tutoring Chinese speaking and writing. Outside of academia, I enjoy playing music and sports. I am currently a keyboard player in my band and a member of the school dancing team and table tennis team. I'm looking forward to meeting my tutees and becoming friends with each one of you!

What is your teaching philosophy?
Knowing how to think about problems is more important than solving them.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I will ask for students' motivations and expectations.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Teach them how to think about different types of problems instead of various problems.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Always tie the knowledge in with real life applications when it's possible.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would use examples and analogies to help them understand concepts.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would try to relate the reading materials with some references.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
It is helpful to share with them your experience and become friends with students. Since you are the bridge between them and their professors, it is important to build a connection that allows you to further assist what they need.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Show them some applications of the subject and motivate them to use the knowledge to achieve their future goals.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Design a little quiz or let them teach me the material that they understand.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By letting them to utilize their knowledge to build their own project.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I would design a survey that incorporates the areas of study and let the student rate how comfortable he/she is with the material.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I would focus on the part that the student feels most challenged by and slow down on going over that particular part.
