Certified Tutor
I am a junior biological science student at Old Dominion University who will earn a Bachelor of Science in 2016. I have been tutoring biology at the college level for two years and have experience helping people learn for over 13 years primarily for my younger siblings. I am also a TA (Teacher’s Assistant) at Old Dominion for the Advanced Biology Laboratory. I also have conducted research at Old Dominion for ecological science. I enjoy tutoring because I understand how it feels to not understand something that is complex or even things that are deemed simple. I understand that everybody is different and we all learn at different rates. I know over time, I can teach clients accordingly in a manner that suits them best. My overall goal in life is to become a professor at a university and teach students who are just as passionate about biology as I am. Outside of academia I love to watch movies and play video games.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that even if I have to teach someone one thing a thousand different ways, it's always worth it if they fully understand that one thing.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Sit down with the student and get to know each other then figure out why they're struggling in the area I am tutoring them in.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
The way I help students become independent learners is to show them ways and give them the tools to study without me.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
The way I would help students stay motivated is to show them the light at the end of the tunnel. I'll show them what happens when you put in the hard work now.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
This goes with my teaching philosophy, which is that even if it takes me teaching one thing a thousand different ways, it's worth it if they fully understand that one thing in the end.
