Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of Virginia Tech University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and my Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Since graduation in 2001, I have worked in the education industry. I truly enjoy working with students of all ages. My passion is teaching English, Literature, Grammar, and Writing. I have experience working with students as young as the 3rd grade teaching summer school and intervention classes. I have also taught at the high school and Community College Level. The majority of my teaching experience has been with Middle School students in a classroom setting, along with after school tutoring and intervention classes. I feel very comfortable working with different age levels because I am extremely well prepared and able to differentiate learning styles. In addition, I truly enjoy watching students learn and achieve to their potential. I am an excellent tutor because I listen to the student's specific needs and establish a plan that helps the student fill in their personal skill gaps. I truly believe that every child has the ability to shine in all subjects. I think that tutoring help is a great way to supplement different learning styles so that students can build confidence and attain their goals. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, exercise, spending time outdoors with my dogs and being with my family.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all students can learn with the right teacher and tools. Everyone has a unique way of learning. My goal is to find what works best for my student's learning style and create lessons that deliver knowledge and mastery of content.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I would try to get a good understanding of the student goals. Next, I would see if there are any particular areas the student would like more help. I would try to understand how the student learns best. Lastly, I would want to see if the student has certain materials that they would like/need me to use for their lessons or would they like me to create based on our discussion/needs assessment.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would follow the method of gradual release. I will model the correct way to do things. Next, I will practice with the student and guide the student as practice is needed. Once the student begins to gain confidence I will then release the student to work independently. I think one of the most important things for a student to learn in order to become an independent learning is their particular learning style. Students that understand how they learn best, can then be their own advocate in their education.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Motivating a student really depends on different age ranges. I like to try to figure out what the student interests are and also find out what they wish to accomplish from each and every lesson. I would set short and long-term goals so that the student can see success along the way to mastering their subject.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would have to regroup and question why the student is having a hard time with a skill or concept. Most likely, it is because of how the student is being taught. I would try a different method.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would try to understand if the student is having trouble with actually reading, or if the student is a fluent reader, I would try to figure out what is causing trouble with the comprehension. Some strategies I would use would be chunking the text, annotating the text, double entry journals etc. I would try to see what method works best for the student so that they can learn to comprehend what they are reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I think it is most important to be open-minded to what the student needs. I find that I always need to go in to lessons without predispositions as to what the student needs. I will figure that out with the student in the first session and adjust with each lesson as needed.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I think that my enthusiasm for literacy shines through which I find helps motivate students. I would also try to find out what interests the student and try to find those materials so that students can practice with them. Then I can gradually release the student once the confidence is stronger.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

After modeling and guided practice, I would release the student to then do independent work. I would use that independent work to assess whether the student has learned the materials. If so, we will move on. If not, then we will need to go back and reteach/adjust the lesson until the student grasps the concept.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I think that it is important to emphasize the student's strengths in the beginning. We can then use the student's strengths as a starting point and pull from them when we begin to work on skill gaps.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

我问题学生放在第一位,因为我相信那t each learner knows best as to what is needed in their education. I would then provide mini assessments and evaluate progress along the way to ensure that I am meeting the student’s needs and goals. Also, I think it is important to review the lessons goals and close with the lesson goals in each lesson so that we are both on the same page that the needs have been met in that session. If it has then we will move on for the next session. If not, then I need to understand how I can regroup for the next learning session.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I try to understand my student's learning style and also try to figure out skill gaps. Once I have an understanding of where a student needs help, I can then try different methods to learn how to best teach the student. Open communication is key.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I pull from all areas- previous teaching experience, books, internet, teaching resources. I also ask the student if they would like for me to use anything in particular.
