I believe that all students can learn with the right teacher and tools. Everyone has a unique way of learning. My goal is to find what works best for my student's learning style and create lessons that deliver knowledge and mastery of content.

In a first session, I would try to get a good understanding of the student goals. Next, I would see if there are any particular areas the student would like more help. I would try to understand how the student learns best. Lastly, I would want to see if the student has certain materials that they would like/need me to use for their lessons or would they like me to create based on our discussion/needs assessment.

I would follow the method of gradual release. I will model the correct way to do things. Next, I will practice with the student and guide the student as practice is needed. Once the student begins to gain confidence I will then release the student to work independently. I think one of the most important things for a student to learn in order to become an independent learning is their particular learning style. Students that understand how they learn best, can then be their own advocate in their education.

Motivating a student really depends on different age ranges. I like to try to figure out what the student interests are and also find out what they wish to accomplish from each and every lesson. I would set short and long-term goals so that the student can see success along the way to mastering their subject.

I would have to regroup and question why the student is having a hard time with a skill or concept. Most likely, it is because of how the student is being taught. I would try a different method.

I would try to understand if the student is having trouble with actually reading, or if the student is a fluent reader, I would try to figure out what is causing trouble with the comprehension. Some strategies I would use would be chunking the text, annotating the text, double entry journals etc. I would try to see what method works best for the student so that they can learn to comprehend what they are reading.

I think it is most important to be open-minded to what the student needs. I find that I always need to go in to lessons without predispositions as to what the student needs. I will figure that out with the student in the first session and adjust with each lesson as needed.

I think that my enthusiasm for literacy shines through which I find helps motivate students. I would also try to find out what interests the student and try to find those materials so that students can practice with them. Then I can gradually release the student once the confidence is stronger.

After modeling and guided practice, I would release the student to then do independent work. I would use that independent work to assess whether the student has learned the materials. If so, we will move on. If not, then we will need to go back and reteach/adjust the lesson until the student grasps the concept.

I think that it is important to emphasize the student's strengths in the beginning. We can then use the student's strengths as a starting point and pull from them when we begin to work on skill gaps.

I try to understand my student's learning style and also try to figure out skill gaps. Once I have an understanding of where a student needs help, I can then try different methods to learn how to best teach the student. Open communication is key.

I pull from all areas- previous teaching experience, books, internet, teaching resources. I also ask the student if they would like for me to use anything in particular.
