I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I graduated from Kent State University in 1993 with a B.A in French and English. I then went back to school to complete my B.S in secondary education. I completed my student teaching in spring of 1996 and had a full time teaching job by the following spring of 1997. I really enjoyed subbing, meeting new students every day, learning about different subject matters, but I couldn't wait for a classroom of my own. I began teaching in 1997 and my course load included beginning levels of French as well as all levels of high school Language Arts. I was even able to teach creative writing which has always been a passion of mine. I love literature and the shared experience reading along with students as they create their own meanings from what we have read. My favorites include, but are not limited to: To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye, Macbeth, Hamlet, Huckleberry Finn, Brave New World, Night and Frankenstein. Writing has always been a natural process for me: the planning and brainstorming, the organizing and outlining, creating my first draft, the editing process and of course the final product. During my teaching career, I served as the lead for the Language Arts department and was able to work collaboratively with other teachers, always trying new ideas, sharing and helping to support our students. I was also recognized by my students at a top 10% banquet. It was not long before I returned to Kent to complete my Masters degree in educational leadership and then my principal as well as superintendents license. This level of study in graduate school provided its own challenges, but I embraced them all. I love to be in the classroom in whatever capacity, whether I am a student, a teacher or even as an administrator. The learning process is something that I have studied and will continue to study. Helping students become successful in school, at the university level and as an adult in society is an unbelievable feeling. It's one that I hope to continue here. As a student, I was on the Deans list several times and recruited to be a part of Phi Delta Kappa. As an educator, I taught for 7 years, became an assistant principal for 4 years and then was recruited to be the head principal, first female, for a high school. I held that position for 5 years then transitioned to curriculum work, another passion of mine. As principal, I helped raise student test scores as well as our performance index each school year. I was the curriculum leader for my building and embraced it. I was named educator of the year for the high school as well as district in May of 2013. I am excited now to begin this new opportunity to work with students one on one and help them become successful - at whatever they want to do. I look forward to meeting you and working with you.
