Certified Tutor

I am a geophysicist with degrees from Smith College and Columbia University and a decade of experience performing scientific research (I've even sailed on five oceanographic research expeditions!). As such, I enjoy being able to demonstrate to students how the math and science concepts they're learning in the classroom are applied in real scientific investigations. When working with students I use an inquiry-based approach to gently guide them toward the correct solution. This gives them ownership of their learning while ensuring that they have mastered the material.

I have been involved with education and outreach activities for over 15 years. Throughout high school I tutored and taught middle school students through a program that aimed to prepare these potential first generation college students to succeed in their high schools' college prep coursework. I continued teaching during college and graduate school where I was a teaching assistant for several undergraduate Physics courses and a lab instructor for an introductory Earth Science course. Nowadays, when I'm not tutoring, you can find me judging at local county science fairs or volunteering at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. I'm always happy to talk about the happenings at the museum, so please do ask if you're curious about current museum highlights or special events that might ignite your curiosity for the sciences!
