I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Ayana

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of Southern University Baton Rouge and Tulane University New Orleans, both great universities in Louisiana. My undergraduate degree is in Animal Science and my graduate degree is in Parasitology. I am presently a high school science teacher. I LOVE science and have been tutoring students in science for 13 years. Prior to teaching science, I worked in research. My favorite sciences are the life sciences: Biology, Environmental Science, Anatomy, etc. Once students realize that science is a part of our life and learn to identify the concepts in their day to day experiences it makes the subject much easier to understand. When I am not tutoring, I like to: travel, learn new sewing techniques, recreate pre-17th century characters, cooking new dishes for my family, and spent time with my lady (our 60 pound lab that thinks shes a baby).

What is your teaching philosophy?

All students are able to learn! Some may need more practice to understand the concept.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would help the student get organized. I would also get to know the student and their view of their strengths and opportunities.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Encourage them to research answers to increase their personal knowledge.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help them with small successes.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Introduce that concept in multiple ways, such as giving real-world examples of how the skill or concept is used.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension increases with practice. We would practice reading and giving both of our understandings of what is read.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I use visual and hands-on activities that cover basics like common vocabulary. I usually will make a quick matching game with index cards. This will allow students to quickly learn a few key terms, and will give them a small success to help motivate them.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Relate the subject to real-world activities, and help the students complete an activity that will help them feel successful.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I like to use review games to assess student understanding. They are engaging and informative.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Help the student to learn the content in small sections and allow them to take mini assessments that help them to see that they understand the concepts being reviewed.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Listen to the student.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

duplicate

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

A computer for video and visual information and index cards for notes and vocabulary review.
