My MA in English and Education provided a thorough background in all aspects of teaching and learning literature, composition, and developmental writing. My understanding of English as a discipline draws on a rich blend of composition, reading and literary theorists, critical educators, and feminists. I enact an approach to teaching and learning that prioritizes writing as both a learning strategy and a habit of mind essential in every academic area, and conceptualizes writing and literature as fundamental components of personal growth and social change. I am committed to remaining current in educational technologies, implementation strategies, and content materials. My background in education has afforded me practical ways to engage students in developing and creating their own content knowledge and skills via multimodal assignments that will benefit your child.

My composition instruction emphasizes analytical and critical thinking and writing, both in developmental/remedial writing and freshman composition. I encourage my students to consider writing not merely a prosaic form of expression, nor an unattainable mode of artistry, but a medium with the potential for meaningful and intellectual interactions between writers and readers and the world. My focus on the writing process and the importance of pre-writing, organizing, drafting, and especially revision, helps students see writing as something they can control. I believe in demystifying writing; the transformation of writing from intimidating to manageable in a student’s mind triggers tremendous confidence, power, and voice. Ultimately, I want to help students become stronger, self-assured writers able to cope with the challenges of any kind of analytical and critical writing they are required to do.
