Certified Tutor

I'm a graduate student at Pacific Lutheran University where I study Creative Writing. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English (emphasis in Creative Writing and minor in Literature). For two and a half years, I was a writing consultant at Highline Community College Writing Center, working with a diverse population of an international, running start, first-generation college and non-traditional students. I tutor English Literature, Writing, and Reading. For me, the most interesting and rewarding aspect of tutoring is my interaction with students, especially through writing. Tutoring writing is unique in how it's so often a subject that is simultaneously academic and personal. I love the opportunity to help students find their voices through writing. My philosophy when it comes to tutoring is that it's best done as a conversation, not a lecture. The key is to draw students out and help them to learn how to find answers on their own. When I'm not tutoring, I'm a busy grad student, and I spend a lot of time writing fiction and reading. Some of my favorite authors include Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut, Flannery O'Connor, Arthur C. Clarke, Lorrie Moore, and Jhumpa Lahiri. I also love to play video games, spend time with my dog, and watch movies (I'm a big fan of Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, and Alfred Hitchcock).
