Certified Tutor

I am currently a 6th grade math teacher at Lake International School in Denver. I graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work and a minor in Psychology. I grew up in Sterling, Illinois and have lived in every type of setting from a major metropolitan area to a small, rural farm town. I've taught and tutored math, reading, and English in a formal classroom setting. During college, I volunteered with a tutoring program aimed at increasing literacy skills. I am interested in tutoring in a variety of subjects, but I am most comfortable with math and reading because of my background and experience. I love teaching math to students who have struggled in the past. Math is primarily taught in schools using just numbers and practice problems on a page. I find that using real life objects or creating stories and realistic problems out of a math problem helps students who struggle to make meaning out the numbers. From my practice, once a student starts to feel success in a subject they've experienced little success in previously, they begin to enjoy their learning and can grow by leaps and bounds. I also ran a homework help program at my school this past year and I'm especially comfortable with any subject at the middle school level (6-8 grade). I taught a section of special education math this past year and saw incredible growth from my students with special needs. This is a group of students that I loved working with and saw great improvement in skills as well as interest in learning. When I'm not working, I like to hike, bike, play tennis, play soccer, listen to music, and explore the beautiful city of Denver. Education is a great passion of mine and I especially value working individually with students to see their potential unlocked and incredible growth begin.
