I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Ryan

Certified Tutor

I am a Columbia University graduate student in Philosophy. I have been tutoring for the last 6 years professionally. In general, I try to relate new material that I am tutoring back to concepts that a student has already grasped so that unfamiliar material takes on a familiar character. Furthermore, I try to have a student do some writing, some reading, and some discussion in each lesson, and in this way engage the main three modes of learning. That being said, I try to modify my teaching style to best benefit the type of student I am tutoring. Over the last year, I have been teaching test-prep for the ACT, SAT, and High School Entrance Exams, as well as high school writing; US History; Literature; and Chemistry, and all grade-school subjects. When I am not working, I spend my time reading, playing chess, writing poetry, going to museums, and taking philosophy classes.
