Lieda

Certified Tutor

I have 18 years of teaching and tutoring experience. For ten years I taught career and technical education courses at the high school level. I have also worked as a home-bound teacher, and substitute teacher in varying subjects.

I have high expectations for student achievement and stress that school is a place for learning. I believe that it is important to show the students that what they learn in the classroom transfers into the real world.

Students are encouraged to express their knowledge in a variety of ways, which encompass all learning styles. I will use many different techniques to bring instruction to an individualized level. In order for student achievement to occur, teachers must be aware of the different learning styles. I support each student's learning with positive reinforcement and give suggestions for improvement a job well-done.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all students can learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

一个t the first meeting, I would introduce myself and then work on relationship-building, then I'd find out what the student's current needs are.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

一个s an educator, I work with a variety of learners. After getting to know the student, I begin looking at their learning style and adjust the lessons. By observing the student's needs, I am then able to focus on helping them become an independent learner. When they believe in themselves, then learning begins.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Depending on the student, I would focus on their needs, and then find ways to motivate them to complete the tasks at hand. Most students just need to be reminded that they can be successful in whatever they do.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

For students who have difficulty learning a skill, I would continually review that skill/concept until the student felt comfortable. I would also look into differentiating the instruction of the skill or concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I have the students focus on words they recognize. After reading, I would have the student summarize what they read. I would then repeat what they summarized to see if that is what they meant.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that getting to know the student and their needs is the most important. Not all students can work with everyone. Personalities and knowledge can sometimes clash.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would find out the student's interests and then look for lessons that focus on those interests. Once I determine that the student is progressing, I would then introduce other materials that differentiate the learning process.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

一个s an educator, I give pretests to see what the student knows, and then I adjust my lessons from that. I would administer some form of pre-assessment to understand where I can best assist the student in their subject matter.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I first look at the materials the student already has available, then I begin looking for supplemental materials that can be added. I also have to identify the subject area the student is needing help in. Once I have done that, I look at materials I already own, and then I search for materials on the web.
