The Beginning of All. by George - September 2021 Scholarship Essay

科学一直been a very fascinating point subject field inside and outside of school. In the 3rd grade, I recall my teacher, Mrs. Parker, introducing us to the theory of evolution. At this point in the year, I have come to respect the teacher greatly and looked up to her in many ways. She began with an exercise of little cut-out monsters instructing us to group them by their characteristics. If they had horns, if they had fur, were tall or short. We then were told to create a treemap with the universal monster that they all originated from at the top. She eventually progresses the theory of evolution to where we all started from “very small critters” and we began to adapt according to our habitat. Eventually, over millions of years, the tiny creatures began to think and move and eventually became humans.
I started to connect the dots and compare what she was teaching us to my faith and religion. I am a Christian and my family has been Christian for many years. My great-grandpa was a pastor in our church. But the words that she was telling us tested all that I have learned. In church, I was taught that we all originated from Adam and Eve, and what she was completely contradicting this belief of mine. I did not know what to think anymore. Over the next few days, I had conflicting thoughts. I decided to continue my faith in God and accept his love, but also learn from science and the trial and error of previous scientists. I learned to find this balance between the two.
Later in my high school years when this conversation was brought up with my AP Biology teacher Mr. Smith, who was also a Christian, he helped me find further closure with Christianity. He taught about basic science theories such as evolution and affirmed his belief in God’s existence. He said that science has not discovered a reason for how life came about. How a rock turned into a functioning cell, or how a drop of water turned into a bacterium. They just didn’t appear out of nowhere.
I still can not find a valid “reason” as to how life began in the eyes of a scientist, so I went back to my faith. God. God was the one who created life and humans, and animals in his image. The classroom has challenged my faith, but, I learned to stand for what I believe in while acknowledging these theories and facts taught in the classroom. “In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.” Genesis 1:1-31
