My most influential teacher: my first-ever teacher by Siri - June 2021 Scholarship Essay

They say we learn some of life’s most important lessons by observing the ones around us. Well but, I am a bit of an introvert. So everything I learned: I learned from my mother. That is why I consider her to be the most influential teacher I have ever had. The reason is that she taught me important life lessons. I don’t mean tasks like helping me take my first few steps or learning how to read. I mean the life lessons no one can teach you. Most of what I have learned is by observing the way she handles her problems.
To say a few words about my mother - she grew up with no father in a low-income family and had no support to receive an education. She married young and moved to the states with my father. She had struggled when her father was a drunk, when he passed away, when she moved to another country and when she had to raise her two children mostly alone. For me, she is a fighter. During these situations, she never gave up or lost confidence, and she has constantly proved this.
Every time I teach my mother something I have learned, I can see that shine of interest in her eyes. Even if she could not complete her education and is in her mid-forties, she still has the eagerness to learn. And when I notice her sometimes opens my book just to read for fun, I see that eagerness. Having this interest, she has come a long way in educating herself, and I am proud of her. She always tells me that knowledge is something you can gain and never lose, and that is why it is more valuable than money. She understands the importance of education in a way most students today do not. It is because of her that today, I value education the most.
After having a long day of running errands and finishing duties at home, my mother would always have the time to cook for her family the dishes they love. I had never noticed the amount of work my mother did until I was a little older, and I would stay home from school being sick. No matter how tired she would be, she never thought about letting her family down. She would look after her family, her house, and herself. It is because of her that I believe being a mother is a challenging job. Being a mother, she has to lead her child, check every step the child takes, and help them achieve their dreams and goals. And more than all, for all the work she does, she might not even receive the credit she deserves, or even a “thank you!”. I think the position of a mother is priceless.
Through all these instances, I have learned that my mother is a fighter, and she has taught me to be one as well. She has shown me never to lose hope. I agree with what people say about mothers being the first teacher for a child. For me, she was the first and the best.
