The Things I Wish I knew. by phoebe - September 2022 Scholarship Essay

Imagine if we could travel back to warn ourselves of the future, even if it were just to give one piece of useful advice that we learned along the way. What you are about to read is what I wish I could inform my younger self. A piece of advice I would give my past self is to be more confident of my capabilities and to work harder to achieve the goals I have set for myself. The one thing I regret most is not believing in myself and pushing myself harder to obtain my goals.
Some goals are as simple as exercising everyday and others are more complicated, such as medaling at state in a specific stroke. I would tell myself that I am capable of creating that good habit. I am capable of doing those sit ups everyday. I would tell myself I am capable of reach my goals. Without self confidence and knowing what you can accomplish when you set your mind to it, you wouldn’t be able to achieve anything, mush less a goal.
Not only would I impress upon my past self the importance of believing in oneself, I would also provide younger me with a strong sense of self discipline. To push herself to become just as good, if not better, then she envisions herself being. She will learn to push herself with everything she does and to get better at every chance she has. Now that she would understand what she is capable of and has the self discipline to push herself she will reach her goals.
I have many goals that I failed to meet. If that advice would have been given to my younger self maybe I would have gotten those abs or won that medal. I know now that I am capable of excelling at the things I put my mind to. I am capable of reaching my goals and exceeding them. Last year I was within reach of my goals and this year knowing my capabilities and my goals are within my grasp I will surpass them.
