When my children attended elementary school, I became an active PTA volunteer in the school where my children were attending. The school staff and the PTA had this great idea to choose, once a month, a couple of students from each classroom to become "Peacemakers." The selected students had workshops during the first hour of school, once a week, to develop attributes of how they could improve kindness, respect, and honesty. These students had positive characteristics and were or became a good example for the whole school.

I really liked this program because the teachers chose different students to become the "Peacemakers each month." Sometimes, the "No Peacemakers" students were chosen and changed their negative behavior because of the workshops and the responsibility and respect they enjoyed portraying on the school grounds. They develop good characteristics after a month of practice.

I recall when my daughter was chosen to be the "Peacemaker" of the month. She wore a yellow vest around the school grounds, and when students had a misunderstanding on the playground or in the classroom, she was able to help them solve the issue amicably. When I had PTA responsibilities, I was so happy to see my daughter and the other students wearing that yellow vest—volunteering in the community impacted me to become a peacemaker myself and make a difference in my community.
