She liked me, she loved me, she did not fail me by Kyomarys - March 2013 Scholarship Essay

My freshmen year, I entered biology honors dreading the level of difficulty the course load would be and how I as little fish in the big pond high school seemed to be, was going to pass the class. My classmates were students who were a grade level or two ahead of me or freshmen who belonged in AP courses. I began feeling threatened, but Mrs. Evans easy and hopeful nature dismissed any looming fears. Mrs. Evans is quite a character when she teaches. She would immersing herself in the material and speaking quickly, explaining thoroughly the material. She will pause and question “Are you with me?” The silent class would nodded giving her the okay to continue, she would point to the diagram of the plant or insect she had in the powerpoint and lecture us. If we would drift off she would immediately snap us back to be attentive of her lectures with her famous motto: “I will love you, I like you, I will fail you.” Any student with eyes could tell she did not enter the hallways of Coral Park, just to do her job or make a living. She did it because she whole heartedly cared about her students, never giving up hope that one way or another we would try and make effort, that we actually learn. I still enter her class and I am mesmerized at her stentorian and compelling voice, and amazed by her sweet and caring personality. She has become more than a teacher, she became a confident.
