Education is a Gift by Katelyn - October 2022 Scholarship Essay

Being able to walk into a classroom, and learn information guiding us into our futures is something so valuable but taken for granted for. Education to me is a gift that we so quickly dismiss and ignore. It is a privilege to attend school and have a free education. It is a privilege to be taught by minimum wage educators, teachers, counselors, and instructors. It is a privilege to just simply learn and be educated. So to me, an education is an honor that many do not appreciate and it is something not everyone is able to have so easily.
I was adopted from China at six months old in 2006 and brought to America. For me I was blessed with a proper education my whole life, but for others this wasn’t something so easy to have. As a Chinese Orphan, at the age of 14 you are kicked from your orphanage, not provided with much, including schooling. Once you are on your own, your chances of attaining any sort of education or higher education is then merely impossible. No education is truly inevitable in such situations.

To conclude, the accessibility of an education is not always handed to someone on a silver plate. The opportunity of education is robbed from so many and is hidden away from them. Yet, everyday, students attending school in my town and everywhere in America dread the next day of learning. We do this not realizing how fortunate we are to be provided an education, whereas on the other side of the globe many are seeking to find that “dreaded” education at all. In conclusion, education to me is a privilege we should be blessed to have everyday.
