Education Equals Freedom by Isabelle - October 2022 Scholarship Essay

Oprah Winfrey once said that “Education is the key to unlocking the world. It is the passport to freedom”. If I could explain what education means to me in one word it would be freedom. Freedom, it's at the forefront of everyone's minds. It's why we have this great country today. It's why many people rebel against their leaders. They want to be free. Freedom is the day when no one is telling us what to do or where we need to be. The day we can do whatever we want. Education is one of the key aspects of attaining the freedom I desire.

I want to be free to make my own decisions. I want to be free to make mistakes and take risky chances. Education is one way I can accomplish that. Learning sets you free, and with the knowledge, you can do whatever you put your mind to. I can't take those chances without having a backup plan. Education is that backup plan. With it, I will be able to better understand the world around me.

I guess that is the reason I put myself through advanced courses and college courses throughout high school. No matter how stressful they got, or how much I wanted to quit, the prospect of freedom was always a light in a dark tunnel. These courses have helped me learn more about the world I live in.

One of my most influential classes was Theory of Knowledge and Financial Literacy. These classes have helped me open my mind to new ideas and concepts. They’ve helped me to see new perspectives, and to understand that I’m not always correct. These classes have helped me become more free and fluid in my thinking. These classes have helped me see what true freedom is, not the glossed-over version that most everyone thinks about. They’ve shown me how to work for my freedom and how to attain it.

Education is important to me because it gives you freedom in times when you don't necessarily have freedom. Relying on your education and knowledge will get you much farther in life and help you become freer.
