My Future Needs Your Help by Christopher - February 2013 Scholarship Essay

My name is Christopher James Katt, and I am a Freshman at Georgia Southern University. I am a Criminal Justice major because I have not ever considered any other occupation other than law enforcement. I come from a family with a deep background in law enforcement and my dream is to follow in the footsteps of my father, a thirty year police veteran in Lakeland, Florida. I want to go into law enforcement because I want a career in which I can help people every day and contribute to keeping my community safe. I want to help keep the people of the community which I choose to work in safe and comfortable on a daily basis so that they can also contribute to society with a feeling of safety. My major, Criminal Justice, will help prepare me for the job which I am striving to have. Many people have asked me, "why are you going to college to be a cop? You don't need secondary education for that job." I tell them that I want to have a good education and a great understanding of our nations Criminal Justice system so that I can go into my job with a lot of knowledge and be prepared to help people, fight the war against crime to the best of my ability, and also be prepared for promotion to the highest level of law enforcement in our country. In all honesty, to be able to be a local police officer I probably do not need a secondary education, but I want to excel in my career path and accomplish my dreams of working at the federal level of law enforcement, and at the federal level officers must have a degree. If I was to win this scholarship, it would help me get through school, but more importantly it would help relieve some of the financial stress which this education is putting on my family. I hate that my education is costing my family so much and forcing my mother and father to use money in which they did not expect to use for my college education, but I know that in the end, this education will help me walk into my occupation very educated and prepared for my future. This scholarship would help me accomplish my dreams of keeping the people of our country safe, and also relieving my family of the financial stress that this education is bringing upon them.
