Give it your all! by Chloe - August 2021 Scholarship Essay

How do you truly give to the world? Sure, you could donate your time and effort to rebuild a building but are you contributing? Yes, you might be praised for helping others but why? Perhaps you are making some sort of effort but where is everyone else why are they not helping? I believe this all comes down to the selfishness of a human being. It is only a matter of time before something too great happens and no one can help. So, hopefully my story and my vague perception of what is happening to the humans around us might inspire you.
When I was in my seventh year of school, I joined a group called FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). I was ecstatic when we decided to do our first act of kindness of that year. We had adopted a highway and we were picking up trash. From then on, I felt it was my duty to aid people and my community. My group then held a food drive and we got 2,000 canned goods for the backpack program, a program that sends food with children so they can eat at home, and the foodbank. I felt as though I was finally contributing to the world that we live in. Unfortunately, I wanted to do more because we just didn’t do enough.
Consequently, I decided to raise money to go on a mission trip to Sneedville, Tennessee, United States. While I was there, I helped put in toilets and rebuild bedrooms. I helped hand out food at their local food drive service. Each deed I did the worse I felt, and I kept trying to make things better, yet I couldn’t. I kept working hard possibly the hardest I have ever worked in my life. When I returned home, I felt as though I wasn’t really helping the world. In all actuality I wasn’t even helping the 1% of the world’s population.
Finally, the problem dawned on me is it not human nature to want to keep their ecosystems in good shape. Why would another person on this planet not care if something is wrong? The answer of course is out of concern for themselves. Although I think it is quite a childish word Selfishness is what makes the world go around. Almost everyone does things without thinking about the consequences unless it will somehow fall on themselves. When I was young, I thought that everyone in the world were friends and could help each other. Now here I am at 16 and I am about to start my last year of high school and I know that to fix things in the world everyone needs to do something. Whether it be just picking up trash when you walk by something or not throwing trash out of your car while you are driving. Just think to yourself how am I going to contribute to the world today?
