Teachers Close to Home and Heart by Allison - June 2021 Scholarship Essay

I sat on the couch with my laptop dreading the task before me, I had a long essay to write and a single afternoon to write it. With my deadline fast approaching, I heard my mother’s words echoing in my head, “You can do hard things.” With her simple but true and effective statement in mind, I buckled down and got to work writing my essay. I received a good grade on the essay and finished high school with straight A’s. One thing is for certain: I couldn’t have done it without my mom.

From the time I was born to the time I was enrolled in a homeschooling curriculum, my mom has been my first and best teacher. She taught me everything from English to algebra. Whenever I became stuck on a problem, she was willing to help; and when I wasn’t sure if I could finish, she gave me the perspective I needed. Even when she didn’t understand the material, she stuck to it and we learned together. She made me do things I didn’t like such as multiplication flash cards and reading out-loud—and I’m so glad she did! Through all the headaches and laughter, my mother taught me not only how to live, but also how to thrive.

I’ve had many teachers: in church, in private school, and in online classes, each teaching me for a year or perhaps two; but, my mother never stopped teaching me and still teaches me today. I am always learning by observing her example. She shows kindness, grace, humility, sternness, self-discipline, and an earnest work ethic. She’s showed me also the value of caring for my physical body and mind by eating well, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep every night. I have always admired her strong will and endless drive teaching me the value of hard work. I might never stop learning from her.

我欠我的许多核心价值观和基本技能y mother. My mom taught me to apologize when I’ve done something wrong and to admit my faults since she apologizes when she knows that she is wrong. She taught me how to be respectful in manner and conversation by training me from a young age to look people in the eye and engage in pleasant discussions. Ever encouraging me, she taught me that it’s not only okay but also good to be myself on the good days and the bad days. Because of her, I know the importance of honesty and integrity as I see those values modeled in her. I believe I am capable of achieving anything I set out to accomplish because my mom has armed me with the necessary skills and tools to change the world and take on any challenge: academic or otherwise. I plan to follow in her footsteps as a responsible and successful woman in the world.
