I am a semi-retired scientist with over 40 years of experience in industry, academic research, clinical microbiology, forensics, food safety, water testing, and teaching. I have worked in the field of Microbiology since receiving a BS degree in Microbiology at the University of Wyoming in 1970. I received my Ph.D. degree in Microbiology in 1974 at UCLA, studying cholera genetics. From there I went on to investigate Herpesvirus Latency as a postdoctoral fellow at UCLA. I then became an assistant professor of microbiology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. I taught medical students and investigated the possible association between Coronavirus infection and Multiple Sclerosis. I left academia and worked as the Clinical Director at a transplant support diagnostic lab where I supervised microbial testing and human identity testing for ten years. Over my career, I have worked with many different viruses (HSV, HIV, HBV, HCV, CMV), bacteria (E. coli, Listeria, Salmonella), and parasites (Cryptosporidium, Malaria). I have taught biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and various biology courses. Since 2019 I have taught microbiology at Arapahoe Community College, Aurora Community College, and online at CCConline. I enjoy teaching and tutoring where I emphasize not only helping students learn the foundational material but also explaining the connection between the information and real-world examples of how the information has an impact on each of us and on society.

Hobbies

I am absolutely passionate about how science and microbiology have an impact on everyone. I find it personally rewarding to help students of all ages realize that science is not an overwhelming collection of facts that need to be memorized, but an objective approach to real-world issues and problems that affect all of us, ie everything from handling food safely at home to future water reuse to climate change.
