I have been in the field of secondary education as a School Counselor for 15 years. I have worked with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals, of all ages, for many years. I have also worked with persons who are Blind or Deaf-Blind. I am fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), and my Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) skill level ranks me between Advanced Plus to Superior.
Currently, I hold two Masters degrees, one from The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville; another from The University of Arkansas at Little Rock; one Bachelors degree from Talladega College in Alabama and one Associates degree from The University of Arkansas at Little Rock in Interpretation: ASL/English.
I have had the privilege of working one to two days a week after school in the tutoring center helping Deaf students to better understand English words and their meanings in subject areas such as health and wellness, general reading, and social studies.
I enjoy being a co-sponsor on the school's yearbook staff, as well as a school photographer. I have a great time working in the food stand with the students during basketball, football and volleyball games, and I cannot wait to do it again real soon. Being involved is a great way for me to foster rapport and have some fun with my students outside of my regular roll as school counselor.
The book, "The Joy of Signing," was the very first sign language book given to me by my mother when I was in elementary school and I studied it everyday because I was absolutely determined to learn to talk with my hands. I will use my energies with this experience to tutor just as diligently as I did to learn to sign, and as I do now as a school counselor.
I like teamwork so my goals are your goals. I want each tutee to leave each session having gained something new each time we meet. I look forward to sharing what I know hoping it will be worthwhile to a student or client.
