Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in using real-life applications and hands-on learning tools to increase the student's intuitive mastery of concepts.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would assess the student's strong points and their weak links. I would try to get a good idea of what they knew, and then what concepts they were struggling with and why.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

In order for a student to be an independent learner, they must understand how they learn best. My job would be to help the student figure out what tools work for them to dig into material efficiently and effectively.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By keeping the material relevant to the student's life and using examples that highlight the usefulness of the material in everyday life.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Figure out how to help them approach the concept from a different angle.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would highlight the importance of scanning for important words, first and last sentences of paragraphs, and then also emphasizing annotation.
