I love science and math. I also love teaching and tutoring. I have been tutoring since senior year of high school. In my many years as a tutor the most rewarding component of teaching has always been working one-on-one or in small groups with students. I love getting to know my students, being able to interact with them individually, and helping them actively engage with the material. Working individually with students also allows me to design lessons specifically for them, taking into account their strengths, struggles, personalities, and interests.

Students learn best by actively engaging with the material not just hearing and seeing, but by thinking, speaking, writing, and (most importantly) practicing. Therefore, I take a very hands-on approach to student learning.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I will teach others like as if they were me. I will give them many examples and analogies that helped me understand concepts. I will make the subject as easy and intuitive as possible.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

1. Diagnose student's strengths and weaknesses by letting him/her tackle the problem in question by him/herself. 2. Focus on the weakness by teaching in depth on the said topic of weakness. 3. Walk through examples of said topic of weakness. 4. Let student try some examples and assess how much he/she has learned. 5. Note where student needs reinforcement for the next session.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

My method of helping students become independent learners is by making sure they establish strong fundamentals in which they can build themselves upon. This means I emphasize the basics and make sure they are very good at them. Studying is similar to sports; once the student learns the basics properly and can execute them with consistency and accuracy, he or she has acquired the necessary tools and skills to improve himself further.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I give them motivational talks on what they can achieve short term and long term if they excel in the course that they are currently enrolled in.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will break it down as much as I can so that it is easier for the student to digest. Also, I will use analogies that describe the intuition behind the concept or skill.

如何帮助学生在r是谁eading comprehension?

I help them find main points of the said text, then string them together so that they can see the big picture.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The strategy that I have found to be most successful when I start to work with a student is assessing thoroughly how much the student knows the given subject by talking about it. This not only helps me but also helps the student realize how much he/she knows about the subject, and once we pinpoint what the weak points are, we can work efficiently to achieve better results.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would try to relate the subject to something new and cool that requires knowledge on the said subject. For example, if a student is struggling with calculus and is interested in aircrafts, I will try to talk about how calculus is used in aircraft applications.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would have them try sample examples that are designed to let me know if the student understands the concept that have just been taught.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

A student's confidence in a subject is built on their thorough understanding of the material and training in various applications of the subject. In order to achieve this, I push the student to think for himself when tackling a challenging problem. The more attempt the student has in trying to find a solution, the more confident experience the student builds over time.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I ask them if they need anything and listen carefully. Then, I will try my best to meet the needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Again, it is all about communication. I will listen to my student's needs, and I will suggest several ideas and see which one the student finds appealing. That way we can both be happy with the valuable time we spend working together.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use books and notebooks. However, I am open to other materials, such as online materials, educational videos, etc. Whatever helps the student will be utilized.
