In the two years I've been a professional tutor at Texas A&M University Texarkana, I've never pinned down just one reason why I tutor. Even when I tutored my friends for free during my first years of college, I could never decide what motivated me. After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in English from Texas A&M University and pursuing a Master's degree in English, I still need to pause to consider all the reasons I enjoy tutoring.

The best reason I can think of is that I know how intimidating writing can be and I know how to appreciate the need for help. I remember struggling to express myself in academic writing and needing to develop a voice for my composition courses. I remember sleepless nights revising and proofreading my work during Thanksgiving Break. I remember the idea of visiting my writing center intimidating me and the thought of tutors judging my lacking skills in writing scared me more. After dealing with these struggles, my strongest motivation as a writing tutor is to find a way to avoid all the common obstacles of writing. I feel that my role as a tutor is to provide a learning experience that is easier than my own learning experiences. I do not judge and I do not consider myself superior to anyone seeking a tutor. I consider writing, even academic writing, a personal, maybe even spiritual, journey. You're learning to communicate beliefs, concerns, desires, and wisdom in a timeless way. My job as your tutor is to help you find and become the voice that carries these thoughts to the page. How I help you find this aspect of writing is through collaboration. You have an idea and I have experience. Through our collaboration, you will walk away with not only an idea, but also a better understanding of how you can develop your voice.

While I enjoy tutoring in writing subjects and helping people find their voice, I also tutor in other subjects that fall under English, including reading comprehension, editing, literature, grammar and mechanics, and literary analysis. I enjoy the English language and the arts associated with it. As such, I tutor a wide range of English-related topics.

This appreciation for the English language and writing also extends to my hobbies. I enjoy writing fiction, poetry, and essays. I also enjoy novels, graphic novels, video games, films, TV shows, and anime. I have fun analyzing each medium and applying the knowledge to my tutoring and teaching.

I am happy to be a part of Varsity Tutors and look forward to helping everyone to the best of my abilities. I also look forward to making friends with people of similar interests. I believe that the best ways to learn many of these English concepts is through fun discussions with friends.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy involves a collaborative effort between myself and the student to achieve not only success, but also appreciation of a topic. I don't stop at satisfying the assignment. I go on until something valuable has been gained from the assignment and applied to life for future success.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know them. Short introductions and discussion of goals, majors, and interests. After introductions, we would then discuss the assignment. After getting a full understanding of the student's needs or obstacles, we would dive into the work as a team. The student gives me information and I try to frame that information in a way to allow him or her to conceptualize the finish line for the assignment.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would teach them to ask the right questions. Often, one derives knowledge from questioning the world. But there are many questions and many ways to answer those questions. What is important is to know one's interest and goals in the assignment. Upon accomplishing this, one can find the appropriate questions, the ones that provide the most relevant information.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

One, we are all students of life. We will never know enough about the world, and everyone is a novice at some point. It is never productive to be intimidated by thinking of yourself as unintelligent or thinking of an assignment as impossible. Remember that the future holds many possibilities and that a small step every day is all you need to reach satisfaction in the journey to knowledge. Be in love with what you want to know. Know how it will improve your experience of life. Finding that means finding your passions and passion drives life and the love of life. Everything you learn has a place. Make sure that you can use what you learn to find your place.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would identify the difficulty and find out how to turn it into a strength. Every problem is an opportunity.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I remind them to think about what they are reading and to feel what they are reading. Reading comprehension can only occur from investment in a text. A good way to foster that investment comes from asking the text challenging questions. By challenging the information of the text, a reader can engage with it more and find out how it applies to their own position of life. Sometimes remembering what you read involves taking the text out of context and thinking of it in other terms such as: What does this text reveal about life? What does it mean in society at large? I know I've prescribed a lot of critical questions here, but comprehension involves understanding and understanding comes from critical engagement.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I like to keep things informal. It is important for me to create an environment for creative collaboration so that the student and I can share ideas and come up with original solutions to issues. It is also more fun to talk about the course materials in this manner, because it actually focuses on the content rather than the stress around it.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help the student find a point of investment for the subject. It is one thing to be motivated by the threat of academic failure but it is quite another to be motivated by interest in a subject. Sometimes, a person struggles in a topic because they do not feel connection to it. Having a personal interest invites curiosity, and curiosity invites questions, and questions invite answers. This is how students can begin self-regulating their study experience. Thus, building a personal interest to a subject is how I approach tutoring.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would develop quizzes and ask questions at different intervals in the study session to ensure the student's understanding of the material. After this method, I would make sure to tie concepts to other situations. Sometimes learning a concept works better by teaching in a more familiar context.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would show them that they are growing in their knowledge. You can track progress in learning and see that I will motivate any student to learn more or to at least possess more confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I ask the student questions about what they need, and then I observe the ways they approach their subject. By doing this, I can develop an understanding of the student's vocal needs and their unconscious needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

我了解学生,他们的态度,ir habits, and I go from there. Teaching should always be a matter of bringing knowledge to the student's level, and I try to apply that maxim to my tutoring.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The materials that I bring to the session vary with the student and subject being tutored. At the very least, I bring my knowledge, and at most, I prepare tests, writing prompts, outlines, and brainstorming questions. But once again, the materials change with the situation.
